Tolsia Glad to Have JROTC Program

Tolsia High School is now offering the JROTC program, which allows students to grow in leadership, education, and training. The teacher of the JROTC program is Stephen A. Brown, but the students know him as Chief Brown. Before coming to Tolsia, Chief Brown worked at West Steel. He was superintendent of the number two rolling mill.

He said this is his first year teaching the JROTC program, and he loves it. His favorite part about teaching JROTC is trying to make a difference in the student’s life and teaching them to be a good citizen. His goal is to teach students that they should be good citizens, that they can do anything, and they should be proud of themselves.

Tolsia Times Welcomes Mrs. Thompson to THS

Ms. Thomson is one of the many new faces here at Tolsia High.

Ms. Thompson was a teacher at Crum Middle School before coming to teach Algebra at Tolsia High School. She was a student at Marshall University for four and a half years. While there she majored in accounting before she decided to become a math teacher.

She said that she started teaching because she loves to work with kids. She said her favorite part about teaching is loving to have the chance to help someone out, even if it’s just understanding algebra. When asked what she thought about Tolsia so far she said, “ I love it”.

Mrs. Dick at Helm of THS Choir

This year Tolsia High School has many new teachers like Mrs. Dick.

Mrs. Dick said that she picked teaching as a career “because I enjoy teaching people something I enjoy or something I am interested in, or something that I love." She also said, "I love my job and I enjoy being a teacher."

Mrs. Dick graduated from Marshall University and taught at Wayne Elementary, Crum Elementary, and Dunlow Elementary before teaching at Tolsia.

Lady Rebels Volleyball Off to a Good Start

The Lady Rebel Volleyball team is off to a great start. This year’s only two seniors Rebecca Rowe and Melanie Townsend hope to take their team back to the state championship in Charleston. They have played some good teams already leaving their record at 8 wins and four losses after Tuesday night’s win against the Wayne Pioneers and Wednesday night’s win against the Chapmanville Tigers. The girls are hoping to make their record 9-4 after tomorrow night’s match against the Wayne Pioneers. Tolsia’s Volleyball team is in the Cardinal Conference this year, so to keep up their outstanding records they have achieved over the last few years, they are going to have to be prepared to take on some of the best in the state.

Tolsia has a variety of new players this year. There are more freshman than there are seniors and juniors combined. Starting on Varsity are your seniors Rebecca Rowe and Melanie Townsend accompanied by Junior Kellie Lahoda. sophomore Kayla Stroud and Freshman Savannah Vance, Sierra Wilson and Jordan Presley are also a big part of the Varsity team. The volleyball team is full of fresh talent this year.

The girls would also like to have all you Rebel Fans at their remaining games to cheer them on and support them through their season.

Project Success

Mrs.Sabrina Hill is trying to bring awareness to students about graduates from the past that have progressed in life by starting the program Project Success. She started this program because all we see and hear is negativity. Students that thought they had no hope because their family members dropped out need to know that they can still be successful. The plan for Project Success is to change the people posted on the board weekly so students can see the numerous amount of people from this area that have gone on in life and found personal fulfillment. Who is the most successful? It’s still up for grabs, so try your hardest!

Band Marches Again with Mr. Nicholas Amis

Bright lights, roaring crowds, and hard hits are common for Friday night football. This year though music will be introduced again, as the Marching Rebels return after a one year hiatus. Veteran band director Nicholas Amis took over the Rebel Marching Program with a stunning rise in the number of members. After only having eight members last year, the numbers have risen to fourteen. Amis, a student from Morehead State and Marshall University said, "Band is fun and the kids like it and I'm hoping numbers will rise next year." Tolsia Rebels (2-3) Have a Tough Road Schedule Ahead, Starting at Pike Co.

Thursday, the Tolsia Rebels (2-3) will take on the undefeated 5-0 Pike County Central Hawks. Several members of the Tolsia Rebels football team have had injuries, therefore the younger boys are going to have to step up , such as Morgan Stacy, who will be playing tail-back for Ryan Salmons. They'll have to steal the spotlight if they want to win. For now, with five games down, the Rebels have five games to go with four of them on the road.
