Bible Club Community Service Trip

On December 21, 2011 several members of the Tolsia High School Bible Club took a field trip to the pediatric unit and geriatric unit of Cabell Huntington Hospital.  While they were there they performed Christmas carols and gave the patients a gift consisting of handmade blankets that were made by the students, and a Christmas stocking.

This tripmeant a lot to the students and faculty of Tolsia High School.  According to Hunter Cavins, “It was very inspirational to the children of Cabell.  We had a blast together and it was great to help others.” Club sponsor Mrs. Sabrina Hill stated that

 "What I hope is that our students are learning the importance of community service.  It’s our job to help one another.  No, it’s our privilege.”

 

Fall Rebel Incentive Trip

On Friday, December 16^th, approximately one hundred ten students were rewarded by a trip to Spare Time Recreation in Ironton, OH. They were treated with Texas Roadhouse catering and were able to participate in various activities. They could either challenge their friends to bowl or play laser tag, and had the opportunity to roller skate. The trip was free to all students who qualified, but the it cost the school $5,000. Almost any student who attended the trip had positive feedback.  Freshmen Katie Jervis and Rachel Gilkerson agreed that the trip was awesome and enjoyable. Sophomore Lakyn Dearnell went as far as saying the trip was simply spectacular. At the end of the trip, the chaperones gave multiple Tolsia backpacks as prizes with a multitude of gifts inside, ranging from pencils, iTunes cards  and even an iPod shuffle. Sophomore, Taylor Spry and Chelsea Maynard really enjoyed the prizes and thought they were a good idea.

Incentive Trip Requirements

Tolsia High School hosts an incentive trip for each six weeks of the grading period. As of this semester, there are several requirements. First, you must have less than 2.5 absences( each sign-in or sign-out counts as half a day, and no excuses will be accepted other than the only excuse that will be accepted is a death in the family). You must not have any full days of ISS or OSS, no more than three level 1 and 2 write-ups, and no level 3 or 4 write-ups such as tobacco, skipping, bullying, etc. In order to qualify for the semester incentive trip, students must have been eligable for each of the 6-weeks parties in the semester.

Tolsia Has New Mining Class, Partnership With Friends of Coal

Tolsia High school has introduced a new and interesting Mininng Technology class, which  is a beginners class for aspirng miners. It allows students to get ready for the real mining world once they graduate from high school.   "It means a whole lot to the school, and should be excting for anyone who wants to join the program," Coach Smith, the instructor, said. Smith says that the program will continue on past this year. All are welcome to join the class and soon work their way to becoming a future miner.    On Friday, November 4th, representatives of the Friends of Coal advocacy group visited Tolsia High school to announce an alliance under the Partners in education. Among the delegates to speak was former Marshall head football coach Bobby Pruett.  According to the Partners in Education website, the program is "a non-profit organization consisting of local Business and Education Partners focused on ensuring that all students leave school with the academic, technical, and employability skills necessary to be successful in the 21st century workplace." Principal Matt Stanley said that this partnership will mean great things for Tolsia's future. -Jordan Prince

2011 Homecoming Dance

Last Saturday, October 22, Tolsia High School had their annual homecoming dance. Many students and their guests attended this fun-filled night. This year’s dance was really good, thanks to the DJ and the black lights. Typically the Homecoming King and Queen are crowned at this dance, but this year the crowning happened at the homecoming football game. Along with the king and queen, the underclassmen represent each grade and are crowned homecoming attendants. This year, 2011, the Homecoming King was Adam Singletary and the Queen was Cassie Rickman. The rest of the Homecoming Court was Stacy Parsley (junior), Samantha Riggs (sophomore) and Sheree Vanhoose (freshman).

Tigers Defeat Rebels On Homecoming

It was a chilly Friday night at Tolsia High School as the Rebels went up against the Class AA No. 8 ranked Chapmanville Tigers.  The Homecoming game began with the Rebels leading 6-0 early in the first quarter.  Jacob Copley had a 34 yard touchdown bomb to Brandon Ward, but unfortunately the extra point kick was blocked.  This still caused much excitement with the crowd.  The Rebels were flying high for a few minutes, but by the second quarter the Tigers scored four touchdowns and led 28-6 at the half. 

The Tigers continued to dominate the second half.  With only thirteen seconds into the third quarter, the Tigers scored putting them up 35-6.  As the clock ticked on, Chapmanville continued to dominate leading 49-6 into the fourth quarter.  The Rebels did score two late touchdowns on Chapmanville’s second-team defense.  The first was a fourteen yard strike from Jacob Copley to Morgan Williamson with 7:36 left in the game.  The second score was a 35-yard pass from Blake Roberts to Brandon Ward.  Wes Waller ran in the two point conversion to make the final score 49-20.  Although the annual homecoming game was spoiled by the Chapmanville Tigers, the events leading into the game were full of excitement and lots of fun.  Hopefully, we’ll get them next year.
