2011 Homecoming Dance
Last Saturday, October 22, Tolsia High School had their
annual homecoming dance. Many students and their guests attended this
fun-filled night. This year’s dance was really good, thanks to the DJ and the
black lights. Typically the Homecoming King and Queen are crowned at this
dance, but this year the crowning happened at the homecoming football game.
Along with the king and queen, the underclassmen represent each grade and are
crowned homecoming attendants. This year, 2011, the Homecoming King was Adam
Singletary and the Queen was Cassie Rickman. The rest of the Homecoming Court
was Stacy Parsley (junior), Samantha Riggs (sophomore) and Sheree Vanhoose (freshman).

Tigers Defeat Rebels On Homecoming
It was a chilly Friday night at Tolsia High School as the
Rebels went up against the Class AA No. 8 ranked Chapmanville Tigers. The Homecoming game began with the Rebels
leading 6-0 early in the first quarter.
Jacob Copley had a 34 yard touchdown bomb to Brandon Ward, but unfortunately
the extra point kick was blocked. This
still caused much excitement with the crowd.
The Rebels were flying high for a few minutes, but by the second quarter
the Tigers scored four touchdowns and led 28-6 at the half.
The Tigers continued to dominate the second half. With only thirteen seconds into the third
quarter, the Tigers scored putting them up 35-6. As the clock ticked on, Chapmanville continued
to dominate leading 49-6 into the fourth quarter. The Rebels did score two late touchdowns on
Chapmanville’s second-team defense. The
first was a fourteen yard strike from Jacob Copley to Morgan Williamson with
7:36 left in the game. The second score
was a 35-yard pass from Blake Roberts to Brandon Ward. Wes Waller ran in the two point conversion to
make the final score 49-20. Although the
annual homecoming game was spoiled by the Chapmanville Tigers, the events
leading into the game were full of excitement and lots of fun. Hopefully, we’ll get them next year.

New Freshman Mentor Program At Tolsia High
Tolsia High School Freshmen started the year out by attending he new Freshman Orientation program, which was held at the high school before the beginning of school. There, they met their mentors, who were seniors. Ms. Amanda Copley, one of the Freshman class sponsors, said the Freshman-Mentor social, a pizza party held for incoming Freshmen and their mentors, went great and that the seniors talked to the freshman and gave them great advice on things such as what classes to take and which clubs to join. The seniors told the freshman about the academics that are offered at THS. They had plenty of delicious Papa John’s pizza to go around to everybody. MS. Copley and the other sponsors hope to see the new freshman for next year from Fort Gay and Crum with their parents like they did this year.

There are currently five members: Taylor Spry, Katelyn Spaulding, Rebecca Perry, Ricky Dean, and Austin Fraley. Practices consist of running various distances, from going up Lost Creek to doing different stretches and strides in order to warm up. Weather Wreaks Havoc on Wayne County
This spring, the weather in West Virginia has had a mind of its own. One week the weather would be cold and rainy and the next it changes to hot and humid. These extreme changes in the weather pattern have made it hard to make outdoor plans. We think of spring time as a time to clean house and have a fresh start just as the flowers and trees are when coming out of hibernation from the cold winter. This year has made us want to ask Mother Nature to reevaluate her decisions and mellow out some.
The excessive rains have caused major destruction across our state from downed trees to extreme flooding. These storms have resulted in severe damage to people's homes and businesses. A lot of us take it for granted when we see it on the news that it could never happen to us, but this year has hit close to home. I personally have had friends that have seen this damage up close and personal. I'm just glad I can say that we can still count our blessings and be thankful that we made it through the storms.

Greenhouse Hit Hard By Power Outage
On April 30, 2011 the power went out here at Tolsia. When the power went out the greenhouse was unable to operate. It completely sealed off and was unable to circulate the air causing the temperature to rise as the day progressed. The hanging baskets were hit the hardest by the intense heat burning most the plants in the baskets. The plants on the tables weren't hurt as badly by the heat but could not be trimmed because it is so late in the year and they would not grow back in time to be sold.

He wants to let everyone know we highly value academics here at Tolsia High School. Also there is a new sign posted in the hallway by the commons area to show class attendance for each grade. The board will be updated every 6 weeks and the grade with the best attendance will receive a reward.

Lady Rebels Update
The softball team has had many loses during the season, but Monday, March 28,2011, our team won a game against Williamson. It was a tuff challenge but our girls pulled through and made a comeback with a 16-4 win. Some of the girls made some amazing catches that saved the gamed helping them to keep the other team at bay. Their goal was to hit to the outfield to get some runs so they could end the game quickly because the weather had turned freezing cold. They came there to win and left winners. Congradulations Lady Rebels!

Tolsia Student Entertaining in Hairspray
On Thursday March 24, several Tolsia High School students went to the Paramount Art Center in Ashland to watch Aaron Pennington in Hairspray, which also showed on Friday and Saturday. He played the part of Brad. Aaron said all the shows went well, but the shows that played Friday and Saturday night were the best. He said his favorite scene is the Eventorium scene, and his favorite song is “You Can’t Stop the Beat.” One teacher who went to watch Hairspray, Mrs. Holland, said that she thought the show was phenomenal, and she loved it. In fact, she went to watch it a second time. Mrs. Holland said that Aaron was very talented, and he performed very well. Mrs. Holland’s favorite scene was the jail scene, where Link rescued Tracy from jail and Seaweed rescued Penny from her mom. Aaron said he is sad now that Hairspray is over, and he will miss acting with all the Hairspray cast.

Tolsia High Baseball
The Tolsia High School boys’ baseball team is decked out in all-new uniforms this year. One player said, "We love the new uniforms and hats.” The uniforms consist of orange hats with the Tolsia T embroidered on it. They have orange belts and orange socks, and they all have different cleats. The coaches this year are Greg and Mark Cavins. There are an about 20 ball players according to a team member.
The boys lost their first game on Monday, by a score of 14 to 2. They have also had to have a couple games cancelled due to the weather. Their next game is today at 5:30 at home (in Fort Gay) against Buffalo Putnam. Good luck Rebels on the season this year!
National Honor Society Member Drive
National Honor Society is hosting a new membership drive. Currently, there are only twelve members. This year, 36 seniors and 28 juniors are eligible to become members. NHS group is a community oriented organization. Earlier this year, members collected food during Homecoming to donate to the Crum and Fort Gay food pantries. They have also participated in collecting donations for a family at our school who has lost everything in a fire and they need help.

Everyone is excited to see the finished product.

Teen Institute Retreat
TI (Teen Institute) is once again getting ready for their annual. Usually around the end of March, the retreat will take place in April this year due to lack of funding earlier. Club sponsor at Tolsia High School , Mrs. May, said “the trip is April 7th through April 9th. TI members and students who are invited usually go on the trip. The retreat is held at Camp Virgil Tate. That is between Huntington and Charleston , West Virginia . It is a drug abuse prevention and teen information retreat for teen issues.”
Mr. Sanders a chaperone on the TI trip, added “TI is a way to meet new people and learn very important social and communication skills. I can honestly recommend TI to anyone and I know they will enjoy it. This is my second time chaperoning the TI trip. I know this trip will go well this year because we always have a good group of students to attend TI. There is always some sort of beneficial change for the students. I feel TI is one of the most important organizations that Tolsia participates in.”
One junior said of the trip, “I like TI ‘cause I meet new people, try new things and it is a blast. I think TI should last forever. Students from Tolsia, Spring Valley and Wayne high schools go on the trip. TI helps you come out of your shell if you are shy, encourages you to try new things and take on a challenge.” Another junior said, “ TI helps students learn they are not alone in life or when facing their problems. I think that instead of just a weekend that TI should last a week so that students could spend time with their new friends. The students who go to TI are more like a family even though they go to different schools. It gives students a break from everyday life and a chance to have fun and just hang out with people your own age.”
One senior said, “ TI has impacted my life a lot in the last three years. I was really shy before TI, but Mrs. May coaxed me into going my sophomore year. I instantly loved TI. It was hard for me to get used to the new people I was meeting and it was hard for me to open and talk to them, plus overcome my shyness. TI helped me make new friends and encouraged me to try new things like trusting new people. I think TI should never end; it is a great program at Tolsia High School . It teaches high school students that no matter how bad your life is someone always has it worse than you, and there is someone you can relate to. TI helps students talk about their problems at home. TI is one big family. I love TI because I can talk to people who won't judge me and who understands what I am going through. It is a lot of fun, and I get to help someone who needs. TI helps students overcome a lot of things, and I can honestly say I love TI and I am sad that this will be my last year, and everyone who can should go ‘cause it is a life-changing experience.
Teen Institute isn't just a trip or a day out of school for the students who go on the trip, but a chance for the students to talk with other students from other schools about everyday problems. The result of the TI trip is greater than the trip itself, it is a life changing experience, according to the students and Mr. Sanders.

Construction Continues On THS Football Facility Building
Construction on the new Tolsia Football Facility Building is almost back on schedule according to Assistant Superintendent Mr. Don Davis. There have been several delays on the construction due to the winter weather but now the steel structures are being installed and should be done this week. The block layers should also be here this week to start laying the block on the sides of the building. After the blocks are laid, the next step to completing this building will be the roofing. "This building looks bigger than I thought it was going to be," says Mr. Mayo.

Warm Weather Just a Tease
As the week comes to an end so does the warm weather. It was a nice break from winter to see warm weather finally flowing in. This week everyone got to catch up on some outside chores but it seems we may have jumped the gun as cool weather is creeping back into the forecast. Most people are hoping that we won't have another arctic blast like we have seen in the past month. The forecast for next week is supposed to be in the low 40s, but according to the groundhog we will have an early spring since he didn't see his shadow this year.

Weather Causes Closings, Delays
Students in Wayne County have had many closings and delays due to the weather this winter. Many of those days were due to the amount of snow and ice built up on the roads throughout the community. All of the makeup days that were built into the calendar will have to be used, and summer break will start a day late with June 8th being the final ISE day. As the weather proceeds to get warmer, most likely, we will have fewer days of being out of school, and can start focusing on more important, upcoming events that come up along the way.

Aaron Pennington Performs in Hairspray
On March 25 at 8 p.m. and March 26 at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m., Aaron Pennington will be performing in the musical Hairspray at the Paramount Arts Center . Tickets will be 10 dollars for adults and 8 dollars for kids. Aaron plays the part of Brad, which is one of the nicest kids in town on the Corny Collins Show. Aaron is really excited about performing. He said Hairspray was the first Broadway show he saw, and just being a part of the show is amazing. Aaron goes to rehearsal evenings at 6 p.m. and leaves at 9 p.m., but rehearsal will be extending to 5 p.m. - 10 p.m. Rehearsal is hard, but Aaron loves it. No matter how Aaron feels, going to rehearsal always peps him up. Aaron’s favorite song in Hairspray is “You Can’t Stop the Beat,” but his favorite scene is the dodge ball scene. The show will be having an orchestra playing each of the musical numbers.
Hairspray is not the only play Aaron has performed in. On Saturday February 12, Aaron performed a play called Blind Date. His character in Blind Date was Felix Robertson (the lead male role), a huge dork who is in love with a girl named Sarah Nancy. Aaron said he enjoyed this play, and made his voice for Felix sound like the voice of Neil from Family Guy. Aaron has a great love for acting. ” Theatre is like life: it’s constantly changing. No matter how many times you do a performance, there’s always going to be something different and at the end of it all, all you have is the memory of the experience that everyone’s loved so much, and in that way just simply the experience is my favorite.”
